Common Core

Modern laptop

Adopted in 42 states, the Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn by providing standards which have been carefully designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.

Students listening in class

Shakespearience meets key shifts in how the CCSS address English Language Arts by giving students regular practice with close readings of complex text using our carefully constructed non-fiction articles. Furthermore, our assessments require the students to ground their claims and answers in evidence from the text - a core tenent of the CCSS.

THE STANDARDS

Shakespearience meets critical requirements of the Common Core Standards in a number of ways:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1

Allows students to determine what a text says explicitly through close reading and to make logical inferences from it. Teaches students to cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.2

Prompts students to identify central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development. Students will also learn to summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.4

Gives students the opportunity to interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings as well as analyzing how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.7

Teaches students to integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.
